Traditionally, Labor Day, is a non-working holiday. But since May 1, 2010 falls on a Saturday, it will now be a regular working day. The non-working day for that particular holiday will now be implemented on the nearest Monday which is May 3, 2010. The transfer of the non-working holiday is based on Republic Act 9492 or the holiday economics of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. RA 9492 seeks to make holidays, except those with religious significance, that falls on a regular working day be transferred to the nearest Monday. President Arroyo issued RA 9492 to encourage families to get together and strengthen their relationship towards a more productive environment, as well as to promote domestic tourism and enable employers to plan their work schedules effectively and efficiently.
Labor Day is an annual holiday celebrated around the world. Most countries celebrate Labor Day on May 1 and others on the first Monday of September. This was the result of a labor union movement, called Eight-hour day movement, to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers. The Eight-hour day movement seeks to have an eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. Labor Day is also known as May Day and International Workers’ Day.
