All Senior citizens, through Republic Act 9994, can now avail of a 5% power rate discount from their monthly electricity bills based on Republic Act 9994 starting this January, 2011. The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has already issued a statement on Friday, January 21, 2011 that they will start entertaining discount applications. The senior citizen discount is applicable for all distribution utilities in the country.

Requirements to avail Electricity Discounts:

  • Proof of age (NSO certified birth certificate, senior citizen card)
  • Proof of Citizenship (NSO certified birth certificate)
  • Proof of Residence (Senior Citizen card, Driver’s License, Postal ID, Billing Statements)
  • Proof of Billing ( Billing statements from Meralco or any other distribution utilities)

Below is the partial Meralco statement on the Power Rate Discount for Senior Citizens.

Eligible senior citizens wishing to avail of the discount could start applying starting this month at any Meralco Business Center. Customers will need to bring proof of age and citizenship, proof of residence, and proof of billing.

All applications to avail of the discounts will be processed within 15 days. If the application is approved, the discount will deducted during the next billing period.

Below is Republic Act 9994 that seeks to provide a 5% discount for senior citizens.

RA 9994 grants a 5% discount to qualified senior citizen residences whose consumption does not exceed 100 kWhs. Since Meralco residential customers using up to 100 kWhs already receive a lifeline discount, ranging from 20-100%, the senior citizen discount of 5% will be applied to the remaining bill after the lifeline discount is applied, reducing further the bill of qualified senior citizens. RA 9994 further states that the electric service should have been registered under the name of the senior citizen for at least one year to be able to apply for the discount.

RA 9994 also provides a 50% discount to senior citizen institutions that have been in operation for at least six months and accredited by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The law also states that the privilege is “granted per household, regardless of the number of senior citizens residing therein.” This means that the maximum discount that can be availed per billing statement is 5%.
