An attempt to demolish informal settlers near the Trinoma Mall along Efipanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA)turned violent this morning. Shanty residents clashed with police as they try to stop the impending demolition.
The demolition was brought about by the National Housing Authority (NHA) deadline for the residents of Sitio San Roque, Baranga Bagong Pag-Asa in Quezon City to vacate the area. Instead of vacating the place, the residents barricaded the area and attacked the demolition team, Manila Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA) and the Quezon City Police District‘s (QCPD) anti-riot team, by throwing rocks and other debris.
The violent clashes resulted to heavy traffic on the northbound lane of EDSA from Cubao to SM North. Traffic was also heavy from Balintawak to Ortigas area.
According to NHA General Manager Chito Cruz, the demolition was conducted to take over government property that was taken by informal settlers over the years. Cruz further explained that the NHA, Quezon City local government and Ayala Corp. is planning to develop the whole Quezon City North Triangle into central business district very much like the Makati business district.
There are about 16,000 families that were affected by the demolition. – Source: ABS-CBNnews.com
