Contrary to earlier reports, there are survivors in the hostage taking that took place at the Quirino Grandstand at the heart of Manila, Philippines.   A number of Chinese tourist from Hongkong were taken out of the Tourist bus, earlier taken by dismissed police officer Rolando Mendoza.  There were a total of 15 Chinese passengers of a Hong Thai Bus that were taken as hostages by the police officer as early as 8 in the morning today, August 23, 2010. The bus driver earlier claimed that all 15 Chinese passengers were killed by the hostage taker.

The Manila police was able to gun down the hostage taker after 12 hours.  It was like a movie scene, but, this will surely be nightmare for the hostages.  The image of the country will surely suffer with the way this hostage taking was handled by the authorities.  You can express your views about the hostage taking in Quirino Grandstand, by filling up the comments section below this article.

I don’t know if the PNP knows what the word “strategy” is… If they do, they should have not arrested the siblings of rolando mendoza which had provoked him to kill the hostages. If the PNP is thinking that there is a connivance between capt. mendoza and his siblings, the PNP should have pacified capt. mendoza before arresting the latter as they are just outside the hostage area and they can easily be captured. This is indeed a big mistake that the PNP has done. I hope this will open the eyes of the government and reassure that the people from PNP which is the supposed to be protector are properly equipped not only with armours but also with clever minds to perform such operations.

No doubt what captain Mendoza did was wrong. But if we take a look at his side of the story, we may come to realize that he was a victim of injustice. Based on his background info, he rose from the ranks of a patrol man way up to police senior inspector. In 2008 he was accused of being part of some illegal drug issue. He was suspended of his duties for 90 days for being accused of partaking in the drug issue. No one actually proved that he was guilty. After serving his 90 day suspension, he was reinstated. But in 2009, the PNP leadership dismissed him because they said he had bad reputation already since he was once falsely accused. What came worse was that the PNP didn’t even grant him his retirement benefits. This probably depressed, angered, and aggravated him, leading to the Quirino hostage taking. Again, what he did in Quirino was wrong. But we should know that he was the by-product of PNP injustice. The PNP has created a monster out of a humble policeman.

TO THE PNP: This is partly your fault, if not entirely your fault. You guys over there should give him a proper burial and give respect to cpt. Mendoza. He was fighting against injustice.

Until now, I feel sorry for the love ones of the hostages. And I feel sorry for the fate of this country. Honestly, I also feel sorry to the fate of the family of Mendoza. I think Media instigated everything to lead the Authorities come up with a judgement without due process. They’ve served our country for a long time now. He should have been give a little respect. But Media as always, they don’t want to be subtle and smart with their approach. Expose! Expose! They only know the end not the way on how or where to start it. The higher authorities on the other hand, because of pressure, decided to indict and pass judgment without due process. More sad, to their fellow Law enforcers. If only we were a filipino that time, we could’ve shown respect and this morbid and unforgiving moment could’ve not happened.

I agree with Bernadine. Unintelligent and pure bravado, or should I say, cowardice. Just because they can’t catch the culprit, they find someone else close to the culprit to show authority. OLD DUMB PARADIGM!

Pride of men can cause insanity. Let’s not just blame the culprit. By Law, if he can be excused for the crime of insanity. Let us address the root cause. Media and how the higher authorities treat their own.

the 40 minutes i spent in front of the tv screen gave me a really strong confirmation of how stupid our “authorities” could get. there were like maybe a hundred of them all around the bus. all against one person. the videos earlier caught how incompetent they are. now, there’s more reason for foreigners to make fun of us. but this is not something that should be taken lightly because someone who’s been with the police force for sometime can do this frightening thing in front of the eyes of the whole world! wala sa puso and pagiging pulis ng mga pulis natin. what else is gonna happen next?

I agree with donesquire and pinaywatcher. The very sad climax was due to theincompetence, insensitivity, false and wrong bravado of the very people who were “in charge” of the negotiation – the police. And rhe filipino media too! Boy! Were they so hysterical!!

Sa DLSU or ADMU ata nag aaral yun… It was all nice and peachy, till it got to the point that his brother was arrested. Before that hostages were released, and that would have been the case if they only gave what Mendoza demands, and that is to release his brother. You don’t gamble with the guy who’s got the friggin gun against many hostages. Mendoza felt cornered, desperate, since parang wala na siyang kakampi, and you don’t make a hostage taker feel that way since he will surely attempt to gain leverage by playing his trump card, the hostages.

And yeah no media lockdown. Parang may mata sa labas si Mendoza, so that gives him more advantage against our awesome police force. Puro lang kasi yung nasa isip is the “big scoop”.

Of course ang pag aresto sa kapatid and trigger. It was a very highly emotional situation. Takot ang kapatid at binalaan daw sya na papatayin for his brother’s deed. He was in fear for his life so why should he go with the arresting police quietly.

Pres. Aquino, do something immediately so this kind of incident will not result in deaths needlessly again! Send these cops who deal with these situations for proper and professional training pronto! And pay them well para di na mangotong etc.! Their salary is insulting, undignified and humiliating! it only proves how the justice system works in the Philippines. He should be given the due process, imagine after serving the country for so long and being tagged as one of the most outstanding policeman in the country then all of a sudden the benefits he must be enjoying will be taken away from him. Because the justice system in the country only works for those who cannot defend themselves with a good lawyer. Look at those high profile cases where the accused are high profile personalities, some accused already died but the case has not yet been resolved…. poor justice system..

The hostage taking yesterday only showed us how that our police are not ready for t his kind of assault and the lack of equipment that could have been used to breach the bus. And also they should have not let the brother take part in the negotiation since he was already showing signs that he was not cooperating with the police as such his gun was confiscated before he started to talk with his brother. How I wish that our police troops are as good as the one’s we watch in the TV series COPS.

PNP/SWAT are utterly cowards and useless! They weren’t doing their jobs! What kind of law enforcement would stand by a hostage situation for 11 hours without a serious plan of action? Crouching beside the bus for hours? Using a sledge hammer to break the windows, nevermind the chances of hitting a hostage with the hammer? Throwing little lighting sticks into the bus? Trying to pull open the bus door with a simple rope which broke? Those are not professional tactics normal police use, those are amateur actions. PNP, SWAT, and the Philippine government should be utterly ashamed of yourselves! No wonder why the Phils is so messed up. Those 8 lives will haunt you forever. Shame on you!!

We are not giving justice with what he did.
We are identifying the root cause of the unwanting representation of evil.
20 years of servitude, received awards for good service.
How could he do that? Should I say, how could the higher authorities take away what he never had. (retirement)
Why not just put him in Jail and let him receive his retirement benefits? Inhumane. While other big crooked Police officers are enjoying their retirement and the fruits of their corruption, one awarded policeman was inhumanely treated by people like him. Poor Human relations!

Look how he’s brother was treated. It provoked him further.

    1. nasunod ba dito ang Rules of Engagement?

I am a Filipino who loves my country and my people. It is always easy to discredit all the authorities involved, but I suggest that we provide our police force with the kind of gun used by those in National Geographic when they wanted to disable a big elephant or lion. If only our police have that they could have already shot the criminal, disabled him for some minutes to neutralize him and free the hostages, then when he gets awake again that would be the time to deal him properly with the crime he committed, and also review his case in the Ombudsman as was promised. We cannot also just grant exemptions to some from coverage of the law simply because they are taking hostages, that’s not wise and fair either.

to all SWAT SNIPER you know your self you know how to handle this kind of situation and you have your own decision because you are sniper either this is wrong or not and you can determine the exact position of the hostage taker..sana hindi umabot sa ganon pangyayari…

I am a Filipino and I feel deep sympathies to the family of the victims, they are our guests who came over to tour and supposedly enjoy all the best that my country can offer them as tourists, which they actually did in their first two days. And at the same time I am very sad that this happened to my country. We are a people who are very hospitable to our guests, we love and value our visitors/tourists. I am sad to see that some of our local police are apparently not well equipped to handle such crisis situation, this may be one of the glaring evidence of the long neglect of the previous regime in building up their capability. This is an incident that we never wanted to happen, but such and similar scenarios we should have anticipated. It helps to know that our new President is humble enough to admit that there is indeed a great need to retool and upgrade our Police force and hopefully major & massive improvements will take place in no time.

The innocent victims of this incident do not deserve this to befall on them, just as our industrious and caring countrymen who work as househelps in HongKong also do not deserve to be mistreated by their citizens, like some were manhandled, attacked on the face with a hot flat iron, etc. I wonder if some officials in HongKong also raised a howl of concern when news reached them that our citizens were unfairly mistreated and victimized by their citizens?

Is it because they are a rich nation and we are not yet? Time will come that our economy will overtake theirs.

i just think mendoza wasnt that bad. he even let the others go. but i firmly believe, if it wasnt for the drastic moves of the police authorities (for having mendoza’s brother arrested), the negotiation would have been successful. ung media nman, masyadong cinareer. they could’v had let the authorities do their move without having the whole plan televised. so kung may tv man inside the bus, then the whole rescue plan is useless. which indeed naging super close to being useless. and please, give the policemen proper training! nkakahiya.

Blaming will not do a thing and will never change what has been done. We learn from that moment that every police and those in authority in this nation needs the guidance of God. without God’s direction, this country will surely be in vain. there will be more bad things to be happened that the dark force, the evil one, satan will impose to destroy the image of our country. satan knows the truth that Philippines is a christian nation, so he wants to disgrace our name. as a believer, as a christian, let’s all stand together to pray for our country, for our leaders, for our president and those who are in authority, for our rulers, for our lives, for our children, for our land. united in God’s power we will stand.
. . . For our muslim brothers, we believe also in you. let’s be united, in your faith we believe, we are all Filipinos, born of freedom from the past and a messanger in this time.

you’re right about the no blaming part because it’s over and done with. siguro everyone lang is trying to point out the mistakes of the policemen because there were so many. i don’t agree din naman na duwag sila dahil tanga sila, duwag sila kasi hindi nila alam ang dapat nilang gawin. kasi wala silang proper training. kaya fear blurred their judgments. i was trying not to laugh na lang when they were trying to open the door of the bus because from the audience perspective it looked so stupid. learn from mistakes na lang yan.

STOP SPREADING ERRORS OF SIN, this is the warning in the messages of Fatima. Philippines, we are not pagan Catholics but some catholics have become pagans. I share the grief of all victims in the Manila hostage taking and offered prayers and masses during the shoot-out.
Congressman Singson you are not just a blasphemy to our motherland, the Phil.,our beloved Filipino people but to the Holy name of Jesus.
Commissioner Guitierrez examine your conscience and judge wisely all decisions you have promulgated. Have you whole-heartedly serve justice to all administrative cases, poor/weak and rich/powerful, as well.
The Chief of PNP have rightfully resigned due to the unprofessional execution of attack by his men, should not the Secretary of DILG, his superior, must by reason of “delicadesa” resign as well?
Mayor Lim, the father of Manila, refrain from delegating hand-on situations to your vice-mayor.
Pres. Nonoy, we all pray for you because we believe that you can not afford how much the Arroyo administration paid the services of the PNP to be their security guards. And we pray that you be more hands-on on sensitive matters. I admire your humility to say “SORRY” to our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong, who were offended by your smile. Mr. Pres. seek to please God only. And we will always pray for you … there’s so much work to be done|

..I am very disappointed on our authorities. They are not fully equipped… and they really don’t know what to do .. I hope this will open the eyes of our government’ and to assure our PNP people which supposed to be the protectors must be properly equipped not only with armors but also with clever minds to perform an incident like this. One mistake can blame every Filipino people!
