Dinamita wants Pacman. Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez is now seeking a rematch with Filipino boxing hero, now congressman, Manny Pacquiao. Marquez retained his World Boxing Association lightweight belt with a unanimous 12-round decision over Juan Diaz.
The slugfest rematch between Marquez vs Diaz ended up with the judges scoring: 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 all for the 36-year-old Mexican fighter. Marquez thus improved his record to 51-5 with one drawn. Diaz fell to 35-4.
Marquez has reiterated his desire to face the Filipino boxing hero, adding that it is greater than his desire to rule as World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization lightweight king.
Marquez knockout Diaz in the ninth round in February of last year and this time was faced with a more tactical boxer-styled foe. The result, however, was the same.
The Mexican overpowered Diaz throughout the fight. Dinamita seemed to dispose off his opponent early in the fight. Marquez staggered Diaz with a left uppercut in the fourth round, cut the challenger’s lower lip in the ninth.
At age 26, Diaz seemed to be on his way to early retirement. He has lost four of his past six fights and is now planning to start law school in October.
Before the Rematch with Diaz, Marquez stepped up to welterweight and lost to undefeated US star Floyd Mayweather by unanimous decision. Diaz on the other hand, split two fights against countryman Paul Malignaggi, winning a unanimous decision last August but losing by unanimous decision four months later.
