After winning a congressional seat in his native home, Congressman Manny Pacquiao has been received his third Fighter of the Year award from the Boxing Writers Association of America. The pound for pound king Pacquiao, was earlier given the Fighter of the Decade award. Pacquiao was the BWAA’s unanimous choice as Fighter of the Year.
In 2009, Pacquiao got a record seven division titles by knocking out Ricky Hatton in the second round and stopped Miguel Cotto in the 12th-round.
Pacquiao is set to watch the Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman junior middleweight bout at the new Yankee Stadium. He will then travel to Washington to meet US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
A fight between Pacquiao and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still in the drawing boards as of posting. Last years bout did not materialize because of Mayweather’s demand for stringent blood-test doping controls.
Instead of fighting Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao went on to beat Joshua Clottey at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. Mayweather then beat Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.
Together with Pacquaio, his trainer, Freddie Roach, received his fourth Trainer of the Year award.
