4G, the future of wireless communications, is here. This new wireless communications service technology is estimated to be four to ten times the performance of the current 3G technology.
There are two main technologies involve in 4G: WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE). WiMax is a standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), while LTE is from 3GPP. These two technologies uses an advanced antenna technology that improves signal and performance.
WiMax currently boast of 2-6 Mbps download speed and a top speed of more than 10 Mbps. Currently, majority of 3G services are giving out a an average of 400Kbps up to 1.5 mbps.
4G is a promising technology with its superb speed and performance. This will be a big boost in streaming video, conferencing and online games. 4G can also be used to replace existing home DSL and wireless modems.
4G services are currently available in some parts of the United States, specifically Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon) and Seattle and soon to be in Los Angeles New York and San Francisco. WiMax however is being widely used in many countries like Japan, Korea, Russia and the Philippines.
