So, it is the end of the road for Google Gears or shall we say Google Gears is dead. Google has shifted its focus from Gears to HTML5. All the capabilities of Gears will now be put into HTML5 web standards. The January version of Google Chrome now supports a Database API similar to the Gears database API, and other APIs like Local Storage and Web Sockets. This also includes LocalServer API and Geolocation. According to its blog, Google will still support Gears until a migration procedure is in place.
Gears is Google’s open source project that enables powerful web applications in your web browser by letting users interact naturally with the desktop, store data locally that is fully-searchable, and runs JavaScript in the background for better performance.
