Do you experience that after inserting a USB flash disk, you will be asked to reboot your computer so that your device will be recognized?  Windows operating system has this feature called Safely Remove Hardware(SRH) that stops all read/write processes on a removable device like a USB flash disk.  This feature prevents damage to data being written or accessed when you remove the USB device.  Sometimes, a reboot is necessary for windows to recognize the presence of a new device.  But this is quite annoying especially if you are in a hurry to save or access files in your USB flash disk.  How do we avoid this?  Follow these steps:

  1. Click Start Icon.
  2. Click Devices and Printers.
  3. Right-click the USB device icon.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Click Hardware tab.
  6. Click the device drive name(ex. Imation Nano USB Device)
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Click Policies tab.
  9. Click button for Quick Removal/Optimize for quick removal.
  10. Click Ok until all dialog windows are closed.

Note:  This procedure is applicable only to devices used in earlier versions of Windows Operating system.  Quick Removal is already the default value in Windows 7.safely remove hardware utility
