Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So’s (ELO rating 2640) gigantic run in the 2009 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia has come to an end.  So vowed to Russian GM Vladimir Malakhov in the final round of the tournament.  So scored 1.0 against the Russian’s 4.0 after three rapid games to settle for second place after a dramatic run in the first three rounds of the tournament.  For the complete scores see the official tournament website.
So is the only Filipino who survived the gruelling matches in Round 1 that saw the elimination of other Filipino GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. and GM Darwin Laylo.  So, scored a 4-1 win over GM Gadir Guseinov of Azerbaijan in the first round and already guaranteed $10,000 purse for reaching Round 2.

So scored an upset over World No. 12 Super GM Vassily Ivanchuk(ELO rating 2739) in Round 2 by scoring 1.5 against Ivanchuk’s 0.5.
So eliminated 2007 Chess Cup champion and Super GM Gata Kamsky(ELO rating 2695) of the US  in the third round after scoring 1.5 against the Russian-born player’s 0.5.

So, World’s  No. 7 Junior chess player, split the point with GM Vladimir Malakhov of Russia in the first two games in the fourth-round battle before yielding to three straight tie-breaking matches of rapid chess.
