PROFILE

LAHING BATANGAN DANCE TROUPE, the official dance company of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (Batangas), marks more than a decade of advocacy to the authentic Philippine arts and culture. Founded in 1995, the group is a duly accredited proponent of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), duly recognized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and is enjoying a reputation as one of the premiere folk dance troupes in the country.

Starting as a fledgling university-based dance troupe, Lahing Batangan gradually soared to greater heights as the ultimate cultural ambassadors not only of the university but of the entire Batangas Province as well.
In 2002, the dance company broke grounds by being one of the featured artists for the Intramuros’ “Concert Night at the Old Walls” and participating in the 2002 Philippine Independence Day Grand Parade at the Quirino Grandstand, Luneta as part of the WOW Philippines contingent. That year propelled the group to its national reputation of what it is right now.

In January 2003, Lahing Batangan staged its first full-length concert at the “Concert at the Park” in Rizal Park, Luneta featuring Mindanao festival dances.

Lahing Batangan Dance Troupe

As an accredited performing group duly recognized by the Department of Tourism, the group is a regular performer in several formal tourism activities and functions in and out of the province and the metropolis.

The group is now a veteran of performance tours all over the country as it showcased its cultural brilliance via outreach performances in Cavite, Laguna, Oriental Mindoro, Bulacan among others. Most noted outreach project of the group was for CCP’s “Para sa Bata” for the typhoon-ravaged Sorsogon and Naga areas with the Philippine Madrigal Singers and Bayang Barrios in April 2007.

Since 2003, Lahing Batangan was a special participant of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ major dance production entitled “Sari-Saring Sayaw, Sama-Samang Galaw: Mga Tradisyon at Interpretasyon” held annually at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo in the observance of the February National Arts Month. The group is so far the only university-based dance troupe in the region to be part of this distinguished national project for four editions.

Lahing Batangan has also been a constant figure in the roster of performers invited by the CCP for the annual National Folkdance Workshop for Teachers — in 2005 at the Folk Arts Theater and in 2008 at Olongapo City.
The group was also one of the participating performing groups in the Opening Ceremonies of the 23rd South East Asian Games held at Subic Bay Freeport Zone in November 2005. They also staged a full show of Philippine dances for the “Athletes’ Night” of the SEA Games delegation.
Lahing Batangan Dance Troupe had already staged three major dance concerts showcasing full-length all-Filipino repertoire in their home ground Lyceum of the Philippines University (Batangas):

February 2003 – “Lahing Pilipino: Mga Sayaw Para sa Pagkakaisa”
December 2005 – “Pamana… Mga Sayaw Pilipino para sa Batangueño”
July 2008 – “Ala-Eh! Tara na sa Italya! (LBDT Goes International)”

Lahing Batangan’s third concert was a prelude to their first major International Tour. The group was an official participant to the 2008 International Festival (August 1-24) organized by Conseil International des Organisations de Festival de Folklore (CIOFF) held in Italy including the cities of Minturnae, Ametricia, Capri, Usini, Sarrogh, Torpe, Ovaddo, Ploague, Florinas and Macerata. As the Philippine representative to the festival, Lahing Batangan performed alongside national artistic groups of Poland, Mexico, Venezuela, Yakutia, Tahiti, Argentina, Russia, Germany, Romania, Cyprus, Korea, Serbia, Brazil, Siberia and Italy.
